The importance of understanding what SEER ratings are and how they can affect your energy bill this summer could make a big difference in your budget.

What is a SEER Rating?

Knowing what the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) of your HVAC unit could potentially save you a lot of money when it comes to your electric bill this summer. A SEER rating is given to measure the efficiency of your A/C. The less efficient an air conditioner is, the lower the SEER rating and vice versa. Ratings are regulated to be a minimum of 13 and can go all the way up to 25. There is a lot more to consider when purchasing a new HVAC unit. Our certified technicians would be happy to assist you in making the most affordable long-term decision.

How to Find Your SEER Rating

Finding out the SEER rating of your HVAC unit is usually pretty standard and simple. Most air conditioners have an Energy Guide that shows the SEER rating. If you can’t find the Energy Guide, try looking for the model and serial number by the manufacturers label and it should be listed at the beginning of the model number. It should start out:

15AC83-1P

15AC shows the SEER rating
83 shows the tonnage capacity
1 shows the dash number
P shows the voltage

Knowing What a Good SEER Rating Is

The appropriate SEER rating for your home depends on multiple factors including size, usage, location, and humidity. The federal minimum SEER rating ranges between 13 or 14 based on your location but the lower the SEER rating is, the more energy your AC uses to cool the air in your home. On the other hand, you can’t predict energy usage using SEER value alone since SEER value is similar to miles per gallon on a car. You won’t always reach your maximum miles per gallon so installing a new A/C unit with a SEER rating of 25 may not be beneficial for your home.
