5 Ways to Cut Summer Cooling Costs

Summertime in Florida means rising temperatures and with that, come the rising energy bills. But fortunately for us, there are lots of ways to keep your cool while cutting your cooling costs in the process. Learn five ways you can cut your summer cooling costs below.

1. Draw the Shades

When sun shines through the windows, it can create a greenhouse-like effect inside your home. This means your air conditioning system will have to work harder to cool your home, increasing your energy costs. Something as simple as drawing the shades can keep your home comfortable and cut your cooling costs by up to 15 percent!

2. Cook Outdoors

Summertime calls for barbeques, right? Now, you have an even better reason to call your friends over and throw some food on the grill, because cooking outdoors can cut your cooling costs. Frequent use of the oven and stovetop can trap excess heat indoors, increasing cooling costs.

3. Change the Air Filter

Changing the air filter regularly can improve the overall performance of your air conditioning system. The air filter is constantly working to filter out all of those nasty things we don’t want floating in our air (think dander, dirt, dust and the like), but when we wait too long to change it, it has to work harder to do its job.

4. Program the Thermostat

If you have a programmable thermostat, take advantage of it—especially if you are gone for long periods at a time throughout the day. These thermostats allow the temperature to automatically rise during the day when nobody’s home. Not only will this increase the lifespan of your air conditioner, but it can cut your cooling costs by up to 30 percent.

5. Schedule a Maintenance Checkup

Having your air conditioning system maintained at least twice per year is a great way to ensure you’re getting the most out of your system. And since we tend to use our ACs the most during the summer months, having a professional perform a maintenance checkup on your AC is a great investment. During a maintenance checkup, an HVAC professional will perform a thorough inspection of your system. This will leave your air conditioner functioning as efficiently as possibly, while cutting energy costs in the process.
