What Does HVAC Stand For?
The term HVAC is commonly used to describe heating and cooling systems. The acronym stands for “heating, ventilation and air conditioning,” three functions that are commonly combined in modern residential and commercial buildings.
There are various types of HVAC systems, some more efficient than others. Central AC is typically considered the most convenient way to cool a home or building.
The North American Technician Excellence organization, which certifies HVAC technicians, defines HVAC as, “a system that provides different types of heating and cooling services to residential and commercial buildings, and for various types of vehicles according to industry standards.” Here’s more about heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
How Do HVAC Systems Work?
To distribute cool air through your home, your AC uses the refrigeration cycle to suck up warm air and replace it with cooler air. To heat your home, your system cycles cooler air over a heat exchanger to warm it up. The cool or warm air is then distributed by a complex system of ducts that run through your walls and attic spaces, and is blown out through vents. Several indoor and outdoor components must work in conjunction to continue the heating and cooling cycles until the desired temperature is reached.
In addition to maintaining a comfortable temperature in your home, your HVAC system is also responsible for getting rid of excess humidity and, when properly taken care of, helping you maintain good indoor air quality.
What’s the Difference Between AC and HVAC?
While these terms are technically not synonymous, you’ll often hear them used interchangeably in the industry. AC, of course, stands for air conditioning, so it really only describes your cooling equipment. HVAC describes your home’s cooling equipment, as well as your heating and ventilation equipment. Still, it is not out of the ordinary for someone to use the term AC or air conditioning when talking about your home’s entire comfort system.
