It’s getting hotter…but that’s cool! We’re officially feeling those summer-like days in the Sunshine State with temperatures in the mid-90s. But luckily for us, there are lots of places we can seek refuge from the heat while having a little fun too. But where exactly? One word: springs!
A spring is the point where groundwater flows from the ground (also known as the point where the aquifer meets the surface of the earth). And with more than 900 freshwater springs, Florida has one of the largest concentrations of freshwater springs on the entire planet! So what are you waiting for? Here are four Florida springs you need to visit this April (and beyond).
Alexander Springs
Located in the Ocala National Forest, Alexander Springs is a prime destination for swimming, snorkeling, diving and more. The first-magnitude spring is a cool 72 degrees year round and features a large swimming area with extraordinarily pristine, blue water. After you’re done swimming, you can take advantage of the other activities the area has to offer, such as camping, hiking and lots of great wildlife viewing. Keep in mind, there is a small fee to get in the park. The park fills up quickly during the warmer months too, so be sure to get there early or call ahead!
Blue Spring
Located just a short drive from Orange County, Blue Spring is the largest spring on the St. John’s River and discharges around 165 million gallons of water per day. The spring is circular in shape, with a notable boil in the center and sandy banks rising up to 20 feet above sea level. Interested in diving? There is a vertical shaft cave where divers can explore a room that is 90 feet deep. Once you’re done in the water, the park also offer picnic areas, cabins, campground, boat tours and a prehistoric shell midden.
Devil’s Den
Devil’s Den is arguably the most breathtaking spring in Florida. An underground spring inside a dry cave, Devil’s Den is home to many extinct animal fossils dating back to the Pleistocene Age. Visitors can snorkel or scuba dive in the crystal clear water of Devil’s Den that is a refreshing 72 degrees year round. Words truly can’t give this experience justice, so check out the video below!
Fanning Springs
With crystal clear water that remains a steady 72 degrees year round, Fanning Springs makes for a great destination this April and beyond. The spring is a second magnitude spring, producing up to 65 million gallons of water each day! Visitors can enjoy a dip in the spring, picnicking, kayaking, hiking, fishing and much more. With five full-service cabins and campsites, you can stay the night and do it all again the next day!
