Is My AC About to Die?

If there’s one thing that Brevard County residents are familiar with, it’s AC woes. Like most Floridians, they’re intimately acquainted with air conditioning challenges in a hot and humid climate. If your AC system is exhibiting the following symptoms, it could be on its way out.

1. AC Isn’t Cool

This one is pretty simple. If your AC takes forever to reach your target temperature, you’ll need to have it serviced at a minimum. If the frequency of repairs is increasing at a steady clip, your AC unit is probably beyond saving.

2. AC Leaks Frequently

If your AC is constantly dripping water, it could signify a number of major and minor problems. The cause could be something as simple as a blocked drain line. It could also mean that the compressor is about to kick the bucket.

3. High Energy Bill / Inefficient Energy Bill

One of the most recognizable signs of a dying AC machine is a power bill that’s higher than normal. Keep an eye out for any unexplained spikes. An electricity usage monitor can be purchased online for less than $20.

4. Humid Home

A healthy AC unit should cool your home and reduce humidity at the same time. If your living space is muggy, your AC is the most likely culprit. Get a cheap digital hygrometer if you suspect that your air conditioner is pushing up the humidity levels.

5. AC is Loud and Smells Bad

A properly tuned AC system should be fairly quiet under normal operating conditions. If your AC sounds like a 747 taking off, you need to call in a repair specialist. Additionally, let a professional assess AC units that smell like mold or chemicals.
