5 Reasons Your Air Conditioner Won’t Turn on and How to Troubleshoot

The most common reasons why an AC won’t turn on include:
1. A circuit breaker has tripped. If you were running a lot of your home appliances at the same time, the high voltage may have caused one of your circuit breakers to trip. You can learn how to reset it with this super easy guide.
2. Frozen AC. An air conditioner works by absorbing the heat from a structure. The moisture from the hot air condenses, drips into a drip pan, and drains outside of the house. However, it will only work like this if you change your air filters regularly. If you haven’t changed the filters in a while, the airflow might become obstructed with dirt and debris. This causes the condensation to freeze on the air conditioner’s coils.
If this is the issue, change the air filters and point a blow dryer (at its lowest setting) directly at the ice.
3. Blown fuse. The fuse box is a small square box on the outside wall of your home or business. To see if your unit has a blown fuse, pull them out and conduct a continuity test. If one of the fuses isn’t working, you can simply buy a new one at any hardware store.
4. Dirty condenser unit. This is the big box with a fan that sits outside your home. The same way the air filters can become caked with dirt and debris, so can the condenser unit. Think about it. It’s sitting out there with soil, mud, falling leaves, tree branches, and maybe even rodents so it’s going to require some upkeep.

5. The capacitor is dead. Most air conditioning units have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years. If yours is older than that, it might be time to buy a new unit. However, before you make such a big decision, you can do a capacitor test. This is the part of your AC unit that starts the motor. If your capacitor is working, you can breathe a sigh of relief.
