It’s the middle of summer and you’re sitting comfortably in your home with the air conditioner running. What could possibly go wrong? Well, the air conditioning unit not doing its job at all.
Why Your Room Stays the Same Temperature with AC Running
If you have come to the conclusion that your AC is running but it’s not pumping out any cold air, there could be a number of problems wrong with your unit:
1. Vents are Closed or Blocked
Most people think it’s okay to close vents in unused rooms, but this can backfire. Inside of your AC unit, there’s a blower that pulls in air from your home, cools it, then releases it back out through the vents. By closing a vent, you’re increasing pressure in your duct system causing the blower to run at a much lower speed. When this happens it won’t feel like your house is cooling at all.
2. Low Refrigerant Levels
Without refrigerant, there would be no air conditioning, refrigeration, or freezing technology at all. It is essentially the lifeline of your AC unit. Refrigerant should never be “used up”, as it’s simply circulated throughout your system. In this situation, a refrigerant leak could be the reason your home is not cooling.
3. Dirty AC Air Filter
It’s recommended you check your air filter every month. If it’s dirty, clean it. If you don’t clean it, you’re suffocating your air conditioner and restricting airflow. Restricted airflow means less cool air, and in turn your AC unit will take longer to cool your home.
4. Duct Leakage
Air ducts are responsible for carrying cool air into your home. If these air ducts start leaking, your AC could be working perfectly, but the cold air won’t get to where it’s meant to be.
5. Air Conditioner is Too Small
Your air conditioning could be running but not cooling your home simply because it’s too small. The AC unit could be pumping out air but if it’s not cooling your home, it means heat is making its way in faster than the unit can remove it.
